This blog commemorates June 12. What’s special about June 12? It’s Red Rose Day…an annual celebration of love and romance personified by the humble, but beautiful, red rose. So as we stop to smell the roses, the red kind, on this Red Rose Day, we can remember that roses have been around for centuries, used as medicines, for religious ceremonies, and as a muse for painters and writers.
The rose was even a symbol of war back in the 15th century, when the house of York, symbolized by the white rose, and the house of Lancaster, by the red rose, engaged in the War of Roses over the throne of England.
But mostly, red roses have represented love, romance, beauty and respect, and we love to gift them on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. They are expressions of beauty in this world, and as such, remind us of the spiritual nature of the Universe, and all that is in it. With the rose we can sense the atmosphere of God’s Presence, goodness, truth and beauty.
As Ernest Holmes says, “No one has ever seen Causation; we see what It does, we deal with Its effects. We do not see Beauty, The artist feels beauty and depicts it as best he can, the the result of his effort is what call the beautiful.” And so even though we don’t see beauty itself, we see one form of beauty in the lovely red rose.
Ernest Holmes also says, We are surrounded by a Mind, or Intelligence that knows everything; that the potential knowledge of all things exists in this Mind; that the abstract essence of beauty, truth and wisdom co-exist in he Mind of the Universe; that we also exist in It and may draw from It what we can take.
As Holmes poetically says, “We are guided by the same intelligence and inspired by the same imagination which scatters the moon beams across the waves and holds the forces of nature in it’s grasp.”
And so as I look at the red rose, and walk in nature surrounded by the abundance of God’s gifts, I can choose that which I wish to embody, what characteristics I wish to take on, and to identify with love and beauty, peace and happiness. And this red rose, on Red Rose Day, can assist me in that process. It can help prepare my mind to receive the best that life has to offer.
There are other fun holidays around June 12. June 10, for example, is Iced Tea Day, June 11 is Corn on the Cob Day, and June 14 is Bourbon Day, an opportunity to savor a glass of bourbon, that uniquely flavored American distilled whisky.
All are examples of God in action, here on this plane of consciousness.
And so it is.
